The work
Created in Bamako with his brother, friends and actors, Ville Peinte stages an urban environment in which every passerby and vehicle leaves behind a trace of its own colour. The trajectories accumulate until they form a shared landscape.
Through these colours, the work connects individual identity, cultural diversity and social cohesion. It conveys a message of understanding between peoples and asserts that differences can come together as a harmonious whole.
Images & music
A darker section of the video evokes war and jihadism through almost subliminal imagery and a dance filmed against a green screen. This rupture grounds the colourful composition in Mali’s social context and considers the trace each person leaves in society.
Composed by Abdoulaye Soumaré, the soundtrack combines Fulani and Dogon references with the sound of the kora. Its plurality extends the work’s central idea into sound: several cultures moving together.
